It was a late kick off for Wear United FC Youth Teams Under 14s today away to Washington Sparta, missing three of the team to holidays!

Both sets of teams held a minutes silence before kick off in respect of the teenagers who lost their lives in the River Wear this week, with one of them a former player at Washington.

Sparta were the better starters in the first half, winning everything in midfield and creating chances. Wear’s defence and Jacob in goal managed to hold on despite an onslaught of corners with some excellent work at the back and keeping us in the game.

Changes at 17 minutes pushed the game into Wear’s favour slightly with Levi and David adding some bite and directness, causing Sparta problems. Wear managed to start passing with accuracy. David, Charlie and Zak linked up superbly on the edge of the box almost resulting in a goal, but it wasn’t to be.

Half time 0-0

The start of the second half saw Wear get a grip of the game and pushed Sparta hard. A loose ball bounced into midfield when Max smashed it perfectly from the half way line and over the keeper to give us a 1-0 lead! Absolutely superb goal on the 39th minute.

The battle continued with both teams working their socks off. David found himself through one on one on goal only to have his effort brilliantly saved by the excellent Sparta goalkeeper.

Levi, who was marshalling the midfield, steamrollered through and won the ball off a Sparta player, pushing out pace towards goal. Approaching the box, he smashed the ball into the bottom corner to give Wear a 2-0 lead on 52 minutes.

On the 60th minute Levi was through once again one-on-one after a precision through ball by David and managed to slot away a lovely effort off the post to put Wear 3-0 up.

With just minutes to spare, Levi should have had his hat trick, only to pull his groin when shooting and having to come off,l the field.

Full time 3-0 to Wear. Another brilliant team performance in a tough game!

Mo and Son’s Barbers sponsored Player of the match was a joint award to both David and Levi who changed the game and put Wear on the front foot. ?

And a huge thank you to Harrison & Brown Furniture who have sponsored our new kits (coming soon) for this season!
