United took on Whitburn in the league following a 2-2 draw in preseason and with a good squad to choose from United were confident

A good opening exchange then seen United go 1-0 up after Mark Naile's effort was parried by the keeper in to the path of Macer Green who converted comfortably from 8 yards out. 1-0

Unfortunately a mistake a couple of minutes later allowed Whitburn to level and they went into the break 2-1 up with a long distant effort which flew in

United regrouped at half time and started the second half well but a lucky goal which somehow dropped into the net made it 3-1 then a well struck free kick made it 4-1

Whitburn added a fifth to win the game comfortably on paper but it was harsh on United
