Penalty drama under the lights for the Yellows

The Yellows finally returned to action after an enforced lay off due to the weather. To make sure they could get the match played with the weather the game was moved to Friday night at Ford Hub. The opponents for this cup game were Washington United Blacks who coincidently were their last league opponents with a 2-2 draw at Washington what seems like years ago.
Maybe because they were playing at the ground they train at the Yellows showed no sign of rustiness in the opening minutes. Two fantastic through balls from Sam found great runs from Sean and Joey before both chances were well blocked by Washington. Wear were really controlling the game in the opening minutes and went ahead in the 7th minute with a fantastic shot from outside the box from debutant Lucas which flew into the top corner. 0-1.
Non content with that the Yellows continued to on forcing a couple of corners. One of which lead to the next goal. Washington defended well and were able to clear. Sean went on another good run and when he was stopped the ball fell to Jared 25 yards out. Just as he had done in the warm up Jared hit it first time and smashed it into the top of the net 0-2.
Washington slowly managed to get into the game and despite being held at bay for most of the half enjoyed some good chances towards the end of the half which Callum, Olly, Ollie and Callum had to be on their toes to defend against. 0-2 at half time.
The second half started to how the first had finished with Washington pushing hard for chances that were generally kept top a minimum by the Wear defence. They were handed a life-line though halfway through the half as they were awarded a controversial penalty that all of the Wear side thought struck Olly in the back but was given for handball. 1-2.
That seemed to discourage the Wear United players for a little while and Washington were on top for a spell where they managed to create more chances and score an equaliser with around 10 minutes to go. 2-2
The final 10 minutes was quite end to end with both sides creating some good chances which neither could put away until very last second when Washington hammered the ball home. Fortunately for Wear the ref had blown for full time just before the Washington striker took his shot. 2-2 at Full time and on to penalties. Lucas, Riley and Ollie all scored for Wear and as Washington missed 3 of their kicks it was the Yellows who went into the hat for the next round after a great game of football that neither side deserved to lose.
Widely regarded by the Wear supporters as the best performance of the season there were some great performances from a number of players. Ollie was immense at the back. Oscar worked very hard in central midfield, Lucas had a great first game for the club but in the end iot was Jared who picked up this weeks Star player award. Hopefully they won't have to wait too long to get their next game in.
