Vedra went into today's game looking to get a first cup win of the season against The Dolly Peel at Temple Park. The lads knew it would be a tough game against a team a division above but it started excellent as Jamie Coates opened the scoring in the third minute after Ben Anderson's effort was spilled by the Peel keeper.
Vedra were really on top and went 2 up after 6 minutes when Jamie Coates latched onto Jake Phillips long ball to make it 2.0 with a good finish. Dolly Peel just couldn't get into the game as good work from the Vedra defence and midfield meant the opposition couldn't really get on the ball. After a couple of minor chances Vedra went 3.0 up after good pressure stopped Peel being able to clear the ball. The ball found Jamie Coates. Jamie's chip hit the bar but Mick Graham followed up and bravely headed in to make it 3.0 and get a black eye for his efforts. Mick had to come off to get treatment for his eye and 3 minutes later his replacement, Ollie Cowie tapped in at the back post after a lovely cross from Jamie Williams following a great nice football from Vedra.
The half had been brilliant for Vedra and it was unfortunate that The Dolly Peel had the better of the last 8 minutes of the half after they got a goal back with a clearly offside goal. The score of 4.1 at half time was fully deserved for the Vedra lads.
The second half saw Dolly Peel on the front foot but it was Vedra that got the next goal with Jamie Coates Scoring his 3rd in the 60th minute. Peel got another back with another goal with a suspicion of offside before Coates scored his fourth from the penalty spot after Dan Lee was fouled in the box to make it 6.2. Jamie came off after this and Mick Graham came back on. He almost scored again in a mad goalmouth scramble that saw him, Kev Philliskirk and Dan Lee all have attempts blocked with the ball somehow not going in.
Vedra weren't to be denied though as Jake Phillips went forward and hit a great shot that thumped off the bar. Ollie Cowie reacted first to score his second and Vedra's 7th of the game.
Peel did get another back, Tom Chapman had to make a save and Isaac Flemming headed off the line but that was the end of the scoring to make it 7.3 at the end to Vedra.
After a few lacklustre performances, Vedra were really good today. All over the field there were great performances but it was Ben McRory who took Man of the Match today for an excellent display in midfield.
