Vedra were back to league action to play Washington Wanderers who were level on points with them in the early season table. The game started well for Vedra with Michael Graham and Harry Powell both almost scoring in the first minute. Wanderers went straight up the other end and almost scored themselves but for quick work off his line from Tom Chapman. The game was quite back and forth and good work from Jonny Stone and Jamie Williams on the right saw a clearance fall to Mick Graham who scored to put Vedra in front after 8 minutes.
Washington then enjoyed their best spell of the game as Vedra got sloppy on the ball and kept giving them the ball back. They made the most of this by equalising with a deflected shot midway through the half. They created some other half chances but Vedra also looked dangerous going forward too. Harry Powell had another decent chance before later poking the ball through to Jamie Williams who wriggled past2 players to score and put Vedra back in front. This was followed almost immediately by Powell being fouled in the box and Stu Bowman slotting the penalty away to make it 3-1. This wasn't the end of the scoring in the half though as Washington pulled one back with a really good shot across the box into the far corner to make it 3-2 at half time.
Conceding a goal so close to half-time could have made the second half very nervous but Vedra had the best response by scoring in the first minute of the second half. Mick Graham was sent through and although his shot was saved Oliver Cowie followed in to score a first goal for the club less than a minute after coming on to make it 4-2.
The lads looked dangerous whenever they went forward and midway through the half Oliver Cowie was sent away again and finished nicely to make it 5-2.
Washington responded by putting Vedra under pressure but the defence and midfield held firm up to the last 15 minutes when Washington pulled a goal back to make it 5-3.
Vedra responded well and scored again in the 80th minute with Cowie completing a great debut hattrick after good work from Anth Deanes and Ben Anderson.
Washington kept pushing and got a goal back in the 87th minute and had a chance just afterwards but Vedra did enough to hang on for a deserved victory.
Harry Powell was Man of the Match today but there were a number of candidates with Marouf Sultan, Jamie Williams and Stu Bowman having particularly good games too.
