Vedra were in cup action this week against Premier Division Hebburn Sports Club. The lads had a good squad of players with Barry Appleton and Kevin Ambler making their debuts and other players back after absence.
The game was played in terrible windy and it was not easy to play any kind of football especially as the wind increased through the second half. Vedra knew they were going to have a difficult task against a team from 2 divisions above them. This said it was not until the 25th minute that Hebburn went ahead, which was testament to the hard work and organisation of the Vedra side along with a couple of good saves from Stu Bowman. Hebburn added 3 more through the half to make it 4-0 at half time.
Vedra had to play against the wind in the second half and again their organisation saw Hebburn struggle to break them down for the first 15 minutes of the half. As it was the conditions made it difficult for either side to go forward, the ball holding up for Vedra and running away from Hebburn. In the end Hebburn added 2 more goals before a Vedra attack saw Isaac Barber challenge the Hebburn keeper at the back post and head down for Ben McCrory to score a deserved Vedra goal.
The final action of the half saw Hebburn score with a good free-kick into the top corner. Although the result was not close, it was never likely to be and Vedra showed good character throughout the game. Onto next week and a return to league action.
